What We Believe

 RISE CHURCH

ABOUT GOD

We believe in one God who exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God is infinite, which does not always make sense to our finite understanding. He is not limited by time or space. He is the creator, eternal, all-knowing, ever-present, and all-powerful. His character is multi-dimensional but no facet of His character diminishes another. In other words, His grace and wrath, mercy and justice, love and jealousy all work together for good.

ABOUT JESUS

Jesus is the eternal Son of God. He was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, worked miracles and gave us an example to follow. Fully God and fully man, He died on a cross to pay the penalty for sin that separated us from God and rose from the dead to reconcile us to our Creator and to free us to have a new life in Him. Now, He sits at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us.

ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is given to every follower of Christ to guide, comfort, convict, and adopt us into the family of God. He helps us grow into Christ-likeness by producing the fruit of the Spirit in our lives, and He gives us spiritual gifts to empower us to meet the needs of God’s people and a hurting world.

ABOUT SPIRITUAL GIFTS

We DO believe in praying in tongues. We believe that tongues/prayer language is a beautiful tool for self-edification and encouraging one’s self. However, it could be distracting to other peoples' worship experience if it’s done out loud where others can hear it. Though God does use specific gifts in the church, He is a God of order. For this reason, and as defined in 1 Corinthians 14:27-28, we ask that individuals who pray in tongues should do so at a volume where others cannot hear and be distracted so they can worship peacefully.

"If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God." 1 Corinthians 14:27-28

ABOUT THE BIBLE

Composed of 66 books authored over thousands of years by dozens of authors, the Bible tells one seamless story: a passionate God on a relentless pursuit to redeem His creation. The Bible is the authoritative and inspired Word of God and is trustworthy and reliable for telling us what to believe and how to live.

ABOUT SALVATION

We were created in the image of God to have community with Him and represent Him on earth. However, through a willful act of disobedience, we were separated from Him. The Father sent Jesus to redeem us through an act of atonement which culminated with Jesus’ death on the cross and resurrection from the dead. This gave us the opportunity to trade our sin for His righteousness through faith. Jesus’ sacrifice is the only means for our salvation and reconciliation with the Father. Because God gives us eternal life through Jesus Christ, the true believer is secure in that salvation for eternity. Once born again, you cannot lose your salvation. Salvation is sustained by the grace and power of God, not by the self-effort of the Christian. (John 10:29; 2 Timothy 1:12; Hebrews 7:25; 10:10,14; 1 Peter 1:3-5)

ABOUT THE CHURCH

The Church is the Body of Christ and Jesus is the head of the Body. The Church is not a building or an event but the community of individuals who have put their trust in Jesus Christ. The purpose of the Church is to glorify God, make disciples, make Jesus known to a lost world, and meet the needs of those in our communities and around the world. We celebrate baptism as a first step of obedience for new followers of Christ, in which they identify with Christ’s death and resurrection and make a public declaration of their faith. We also celebrate communion as an ongoing remembrance of the sacrifice Jesus made for us on the cross.

ABOUT FOLLOWING CHRIST

When we put our faith in Jesus Christ, it ignites a spiritual chain reaction and produces evidence of our salvation. We are forgiven of sin, declared right before God, and given eternal life with Him. The Holy Spirit is given to assure us of our salvation, adopt us into God’s family, and to live in us and empower us for a life of following Jesus. This results in the fruits of the Spirit – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

ABOUT THE FUTURE

In the end of all things, Jesus will reign eternally. He will judge His creation according to the character that has been revealed to us through His word with justice and mercy. Those who have found salvation through Jesus Christ will enjoy His presence forever; those who have not will be separated from God for eternity.

ABOUT MARRIAGE

We believe that God created marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman. Those who live within God’s design for sex and marriage experience the blessing of His good design. Decisions to change, alter, or modify God’s will in marriage or sex are part of man’s sinful nature and will ultimately lead to unfulfillment.

ABOUT IDENTITY

We believe God created mankind in His image, forming each person in the womb from conception until the point of death when they breathe their last breath. This includes assigning gender to His people, male (man) and female (woman). He created them sexually and biologically different, but with equal personal dignity and value (Genesis 1:26-28).

ABOUT ETERNAL SECURITY

It is God’s divine decision to save a person and it is God’s kindness, forbearance and patience that lead that person to repentance — Romans 2:4. All glory for the salvation and security of every believer belongs to God alone — Romans 3:21-31Ephesians 1:7-9Ephesians 2:8-9Jude 1:24-25. We believe that everyone who is born again by the Spirit through Jesus Christ is eternally assured of salvation from the moment of conversion. This assurance relies on God’s decisive grace rather than on the works of the Christian. Obedience, good works and fruit-bearing do not earn or retain the believer’s salvation, but indicate the reality of the person’s love of Christ and profession of faith — Luke 6:46John 14:21James 2:17-18.

Eternal security in salvation relies on the Lord’s guarantee of each believer’s adoption as His son or daughter — Galatians 4:4-7, and His seal of the believer by the Holy Spirit — 2 Corinthians 1:21-22Ephesians 1:13-14, and the conviction that God gives the Holy Spirit to each believer as a down payment toward future bliss in heaven — 2 Corinthians 1:21-22. A person who professes genuine faith in Christ immediately becomes His possession — Luke 23:42-43Acts 2:40-41Acts 16: 30-34, and nothing can snatch that person out of His hands — John 10:27-29. Having been bought with the price of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion as complete payment for sin, Christians are not their own. They are Christ’s possession — 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. This assurance is absolutely certain, reserved in heaven, protected by God’s unlimited power — 1 Peter 1:4-5.
